With extensive experience in defense and an emphasis on naval sciences, Alvaro Monteiro is a member of the Board of Directors of Piemonte, as well as the Center for Political and Strategic Studies of the Navy and the Academic Council of the Institute of Strategic Studies of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF).
He graduated from the Naval Academy and served in the Brazilian Navy in the Marine Corps for 46 years, reaching the rank of Squadron Admiral (Marine). He was the General Commander of the Marine Corps from 2006 to 2010. In addition to taking all the career courses established by the Brazilian Navy, he also had the opportunity to attend the “Royal Navy Staff Course” of the Royal Navy in London.
After his Navy career, he began an academic career, graduating with a PhD in Political Science from UFF and publishing several works with an emphasis on Strategic Studies.
He is currently a Collaborating Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Maritime Studies at the Naval War College (Professional Master’s and doctorate degrees from CAPES/MEC) and a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Political and Strategic Studies of the Navy. In addition to being a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Strategic Studies, he is also a member of the Academic Council of the same Institute.
